Memorial Day, Gratitude, and the Dogs Beside Us

A respectful Memorial Day post reflecting on service, gratitude, family, and the comfort dogs so often bring.
Memorial Day is not just another long weekend, and I think it is worth saying that plainly.

Around here, like in many homes, the day may include food on the grill, kids in the yard, and dogs making the rounds hoping somebody drops something worth investigating. But underneath the normal family rhythm of the day, there is something weightier. Memorial Day asks us to remember with gratitude the men and women who gave their lives in service to this country.

I always try to hold that respect at the center of the day.

One of the things I have noticed over the years is how often dogs are present in moments of remembrance. They are there on porches while families gather. They are under picnic tables while stories get told. They sit by veterans, widows, grandparents, and children who may not fully understand the history being honored, but can still feel the tenderness of the day.

Dogs have a quiet way of making space for emotion. They do not interrupt grief. They do not rush memory. They simply stay close.

I think that is one reason dogs mean so much to so many families. They become part of the texture of our lives, which means they also become part of how we remember. Holiday photos, backyard conversations, reunions, tears, laughter, the dog is there, often in the middle of it and occasionally stealing a hot dog if nobody is paying attention.

Memorial Day also reminds me that home is precious. The freedom to gather, raise families, build routines, and enjoy ordinary peace is not something to treat casually. It is bought dearly. That kind of truth should make all of us more grateful for even the simplest gifts.

So today, if your day includes a dog at your feet and people you love nearby, I hope you enjoy it. I also hope you take a moment to remember why the day exists in the first place.

At our kennel, we are deeply thankful for the lives laid down in service and for the families who carry that legacy forward. May this Memorial Day be one of gratitude, reflection, and reverence.

And if your dog insists on supervising the grill from a dangerously optimistic distance, well, some traditions are universal.
